Welcome to Fourth Grade!  The students and teachers have been very busy this year, despite only being in school for four full weeks.  In Language Arts, both classes have been reading about journeys.  Some have read about an Alaskan sled-dog’s journey and others have read about journeys to other places and times.  A few have even read about the great Leonardo Da Vinci.

In Math we have hit the ground running.  In Fourth Grade many new standards will be introduced that build on last year’s skills.  Multiplication fact recall is very important for many of the concepts we will be covering this year.  Please make multiplication practice a part of your daily homework routine.  A few minutes of practice each day with flashcards, will have an enormous payoff later this year.

The Science classes are wrapping up an in-depth study on plants.  We have learned about pollination, photosynthesis, and even had a guest presentation on hydroponic gardening by Mr. Tim Kiser.  Mr. Kiser built a hydroponic gardening system for us to keep in our classroom—currently we are growing lettuce.

In Virginia Studies the students have been exploring the geographic regions of Virginia.  Your child has been given a set of Race Cards which will help them prepare for their Virginia Studies test.  Throughout the year they will accumulate several sets of these cards, each one being a different color.  Help your child be successful in Virginia Studies by encouraging daily review of the material on the cards.

On Monday and Tuesday of next week we will be administering the Stanford Test.  Please make sure your child is at school each day and on time.  Try to get plenty of rest and eat a good breakfast each morning.

On October 9, the Third, Fourth, and Fifth Grade students who have earned enough Stonewall Bucks will be going on a fieldtrip to a corn maze in Abingdon.  I am sure you have heard your child talking about this already, rest assured, more information will be sent home prior to our trip.

Please make sure you are checking and signing agendas each night!
